Dr. Steffen was raised on a small grain and hog farm near El Paso, Illinois. He graduated from El Paso High School and then received an Associates of Applied Sciences degree from Illinois Central College. He then worked as a farm equipment technician for several years before returning to school and receiving his BS degree in Agriculture Education from Illinois State University. He taught at Dickinson State University in North Dakota, then went to Iowa State University where he taught and received an MS and Ph.D. in Agriculture Education.
His interest areas include teacher preparation, development and evaluation of curriculum and teaching aids, particularly in the areas of agricultural mechanics and agricultural safety and health.

The Department of Agriculture offers a variety of scholarships to currently enrolled students and students entering the Department as freshmen or community college transfers. Scholarships for currently enrolled students. Recipients must be full-time students with a declared major in Agriculture. Recipients must have an established ISU grade point average. Awards are made annually in May.
