Crop Production and Marketing Contest

The Department of Agriculture at Illinois State University has designed and implemented a contest to provide students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with crop production and marketing.

  • Four teams representing student organizations
  • At least five undergraduate students per team
  • Design and implement their own crop production and marketing strategies on five acres plots at the Illinois State University Farm
  • Assume that the five acres plot represent 1,000 acres
  • Soybeans grown in odd years and corn in even years
  • Teams: decide inputs, management strategies, and complete all work
    • Soil testing
    • Seed variety selection
    • Tillage
    • Ag chemicals
    • Equipment
    • Marketing
  • Team objective: obtain the highest return to management
